Jack, who takes on the role as caretaker for a historic hotel located in the Rocky Mountains and along with his family (including his wife and son) stay throughout the cold winter months to help refurbish the hotel. With a violent history, a fair few ghosts and the remoteness of the location see Jack slowly begin to lose his mind, along with the ability to see the past and future, something which is particularly interesting to the ghostly inhabitants of the hotel.

It surely cannot be a list of some of the best horror movies of all time if it does not include Psycho. The rest centres around the motels manager Norman Bates and you will find yourself shocked with his relationship with his mother too. If you are looking for something with a shock factor then psycho has it all. You will be shocked and ready to sleep with the light on after this one.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is, as many have described it, horror in its gruesome and more raw form. The film follows a group of friends who run into a family of cannibals while they are on their way to visit an old, ruined homestead. Although often referred to as a true story it is thankfully entirely fictional, although some of the crimes were inspired by real life murderer Ed Gein. Although gruesome to watch this is a film that will definitely continue to make best horror film lists for years to come.
